Rowers rescued by firefighters after boat capsized on River Tyne in Hexham

A number of rowers were rescued from the River Tyne in Hexham after their boat capsized.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) were called to the river near to Hexham Bridge after the alarm was raised by Hexham Rowing Club.

At least five women were stranded in the water after their boat turned over and a rescue boat was launched to save them.

The rowers were not believed to be in serious danger due to the water only reaching waist height.

The swift water teams from Hexham and Pegswood station were called just before 12pm on Monday, as well as a fire crew from Hexham and an officer.

NFRS said five casualties were accounted for but the North East Ambulance Service said they treated six people in total.

They were handed over to paramedics to be assessed once they were back onshore.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 12.03pm to reports of people in the water at Hexham Bridge.

"We dispatched two double-crewed ambulances and an officer.

"We treated and discharged six people with mild hypothermia-related symptoms from the cold water."

Fire crews left the scene just after 12.30pm.
