Row over plan for 450ft zip wire across Liverpool city centre

A city councillor has registered an objection to plans to launch a 450ft zipline that would take thrillseekers across Liverpool's famous city centre.

Before Christmas, attraction company Zip World submitted plans to Liverpool City Council that, if approved, would create the UK's first ever permanent urban zipline in the heart of Liverpool.

The proposal would see people travel from the the top of the iconic St Johns Beacon on a zip line and land on the top of the historic Liverpool Central Library.

This would be the company’s first zip line outside of Wales, and the first permanent city zip in the UK, creating new local full time and part time employment opportunities for Liverpool.

If the plans get the green light from the city council, the scheduled opening for the attraction will be in 2021.

The design will see two riders dispatched at a time in a sit-down style harness, travelling across the cityscape.

But they are facing stiff opposition from city councillor Nick Small.

He has registered a formal objection to the plans, which he said would 'shatter' the oasis of calm that currently exists in St John's Gardens.

He said: "This is a barmy idea.

"St John's Gardens is an oasis of calm in the City Centre.

"There are many memorials there and people come there to get away from everything.

"That'll be shattered by having hundreds of screaming people on a zip wire.  The people behind this should look for a better location."

Zip World describes itsaelf as  one of the biggest tourist attractions in the UK, with three destinations across the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales at present.

A spokesman for the company said: "Zip World's innovation has seen it achieve many notable firsts, including Zip World Velocity 2 being the fastest zip line in the world and longest in Europe, Zip World Titan as the largest zip zone in Europe, and having the largest subterranean playground in Zip World Bounce Below and Zip World Caverns."

The application is expected to be debated at an upcoming Liverpool Council planning meeting.
