Row on GMB as expert says 'fat people' should be banned from buying junk food

A health expert sparked a heated debate on Good Morning Britain when he called for obese people to be banned from buying junk food.

Weight-loss motivator Steve Miller said we have to 'be cruel to be kind' sometimes if we want to save the lives of people who are overweight.

Speaking on GMB this morning Mr Miller said: "We have to have some behaviour change in the UK, and if that means being cruel to be kind sometimes - a bit of tough love - then that's what we're going to have to do."

Ateh Jewel responded saying 'shame is what stops people reaching for help' but Mr Miller spoke over her saying 'it is not shaming'.

She said: "It would be laughable if it wasn't so dangerous."

Mr Miller said: "We need to turn this around and call it life saving."

He said one in four people in this country are obese - sparking an epidemic of type two diabetes.

He said: "For those people with a BMI of 40+, we are talking really quite big, to make sure we look after those people absolutely to save their lives - potentially that we look after them and refuse to serve junk food to them."

Host Susanna Reid said people would just go home and order food or eat what's in the fridge.

She said: "When you say you shouldn't use the words fat shaming that's literally what you suggest should happen to people."
