AYUTTHAYA: Scores of people have been left homeless after a fire broke out in a community of old wooden houses in Phachi district late on Saturday night, destroying 11 row houses and three detached houses. Nobody was hurt.

Pol Lt Col Tawatchai Chanruang, a Phachi police investigator, said the fire started at about 10pm in one of the wooden row houses, which are nearly 100 years old, and spread quickly to the adjacent structures. The blaze occurred about 300 metres from the Phachi railway junction.

About 20 fire engines managed to bring the fire under control in about an hour, but 11 row houses and three other houses nearby were burnt to the ground. Nobody was hurt.

Sujin Chaichumsak, the Ayutthaya governor, said he had ordered officials to set up a temporary centre to provide assistance to people who had been left homeless by the fire.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.

In another fire on Saturday evening, three old wooden houses were burnt down in Hat Yai.
