Row erupts as Leeds woman claims 'river view flat' actually faces car park

A bitter row has erupted between a Leeds property business and a local woman over the state of a flat.

Miss Nguyen, a young healthcare professional is livid after moving in to a property she had only viewed online, and finding that the place was "nothing like" what she had seen on videos and pictures. Miss Nguyen, who discovered the flat online, claims she was pressured into putting a holding fee down, and told many other people wanted the flat and she would need to act quickly to secure it.

She said: "When I found the flat online, I asked to view it but they said they were fully booked and two other people wanted the flat.

"I paid 5 weeks rent as deposit, and my normal rental, which was almost £1,800."

Miss Nguyen claims she asked Bridgfords Letting Agency which way the balcony was facing, and she was told the balcony of the flat was "river facing". She said: "I asked the guy which side the balcony is facing and he said it is facing riverside."

And Miss Nguyen claims she got the shock of her life when she tried moved in and found out the furniture was broken, the smoke alarms were not working, and some parts had mould. She said: "None of the smoke alarms were installed.

"I have asthma and I couldn't live in there because it is so mouldy. I have no family, and I have to stay work. My family is not from Leeds and I have no place to live.

"The bed is broken. The flat is nothing like what they sent me on the video.

"The legs of the sofa are broken. The bed is missing a leg and the frames is broken and the bathroom is so moldy, its dusty, and filthy."

Miss Nguyen says she found somebody else to take over the tenancy, and asked the agents to return her money but they refused to give her back her first month rent or her deposit back. She said: "I can't get the money back through the deposit scheme because I never lived in there."

But, Bridgfords Letting agency disputes Miss Nguyen's account. A Bridgfords spokesperson said: “We are, of course, disappointed that this tenant was not happy with the property on moving in.

"We endeavoured to assist as much as possible at the time and arranged for her to be released early from her tenancy, as requested. Contrary to what has been claimed our experienced lettings staff found no evidence of a mould problem at the property which has now been re-let without issue.

"This property was advertised with 'dock view', but did not specify facing the river."
