Row as councillor who apologised after Jewish community remarks nominates Scottish Labour leadership contender

A row has broken out after a councillor who apologised after making comments about the Jewish community nominated a Scottish Labour leadership contender.

Jim Sheridan, who once said he no longer had the "utmost respect" for the community amid the Labour anti-semitism row, has backed MSP Monica Lennon for the top job.

A Jewish Labour Movement source said: “No one should be expecting his support or nomination.”

Under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, Labour was dogged by allegations of anti-Semitism by members.

Sheridan, a former MP who is now a party councillor in Renfrewshire, was criticised for writing in 2018 that he had lost “respect and empathy” for the Jewish community amid the anti-Semitism row.

Corbyn said the comments were "completely unacceptable" and Sheridan was suspended.

He was later reinstated and said at the time: "I was notified that my suspension from the Labour Party has been lifted with no further action to be taken by the party.

"Whilst I am delighted with this decision, I remain of the view that my accusers were misguided and overreacted to what was intended to highlight my personal frustration and criticism of those intent on undermining our leadership in Scotland and the UK.

"I would also like to reiterate my sincere apologies to the Jewish community whose historic struggle I have supported all my political life."

Lennon is going head to head against fellow MSP Anas Sarwar after the resignation of Richard Leonard.

A list of nominations is on the party website and Sheridan is shown as supporting Lennon.

A spokesperson for the Lennon campaign said: “Voluntary nominations are submitted in accordance with party rules. Monica Lennon has a strong record on equalities and her support for the Jewish community is unwavering.”

Sheridan declined to comment.
