Rounds 3 and 4 of Champions Cup get green light but doubt remains over Leinster tie

The next two rounds of the Heineken Champions Cup are scheduled to go ahead as planned following talks between organisers EPCR and the relevant leagues and unions.

Round three is set to kick off next Friday night but there was doubt over the fixtures going ahead after French Government travel restrictions forced five postponements of matches between clubs from France and the UK.

However the French government has now put in place exemptions for the "pursuit of an economic activity" which will apply to clubs and match officials who are travelling between France and the UK.

"Further information will also be sought from the French authorities regarding possible new conditions which may be applicable to travel between France and the UK," read an EPCR statement.

"While recognising that these are particularly challenging times for all its stakeholders, EPCR will continue to work with the leagues and unions so that this month’s matches can be played safely."

However Leinster's RDS encounter with Montpellier, which is pencilled in for Sunday, January 16, is already at risk after the Top 14 club's clash with Toulon this weekend was postponed due to Covid cases in the Montpellier squad.

Leinster are still hoping that EPCR revisits the decision to award Montpellier the points from the side's cancelled clash from December 17.

Meanwhile, despite the fixture pile-up EPCR remain optimistic that the rest of the tournament - and the Challenge Cup - will be played off successfully, although it now looks likely that the planned two-legged round of 16 will change to a straight knock-out format.

"In addition, discussions are ongoing regarding the five Heineken Champions Cup and two Challenge Cup Round 2 fixtures which were postponed due to unforeseen circumstances arising from changes to border controls between France and the UK," added the statement.

"No further comment will be made at this time."
