Roundabout plan to ease Jock's Lodge Junction 'pinch point' on A1079

Plans have been unveiled to improve the Jock’s Lodge junction on one of the region’s busiest stretches of trunk road, between Beverley and Hull.

A new roundabout is part of a new design for the A1079, with two new roads to join it to the A164.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will put the proposal on display at two public exhibitions later this month, with feedback sought.

Subject to funding approval for the scheme, work could begin in late 2022, with a two-year timeframe.

It focuses on two of the busiest roads immediately outside of Hull, carrying up to 50,000 vehicles per day between them.

Plans include the construction of a new roundabout along the A1079 with new connection to Lincoln Way roundabout in Minster Way, Beverley.

Two new roads, travelling northbound and southbound, will connect the new A1079 roundabout with the A164 further south, near Bentley. Together these would replace the current Jock’s Lodge junction.

Councillor Chris Matthews, portfolio holder for strategic management, said: “The A164 and the A1079 are two of the busiest roads in the East Riding and where they meet, at the Jock’s Lodge junction, this has always created a pinch point for traffic.

“Despite work being carried out over the years to improve the safety of the junction, this has never really eased the congestion, and the only solution for us now is a major road improvement scheme.

“This project has been a huge challenge for our civil engineers but we believe we have come up with the best possible solution to reduce congestion and keep traffic disruption to a minimum during the construction.

“So we hope residents, motorists and business people will go along to the exhibitions or view the plans on our website and then give us their feedback.”

The first event takes place between 10am and 5pm on Monday, February 24, at East Riding Leisure Beverley in Flemingate. The following day, officers and engineers will be on hand at Lazaat Hotel in Woodhill Way, Cottingham, between 10am and 7pm.

They will feed into the planning application, anticipated in April this year.
