Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday warned the United States against pursuing hostile policies toward Tehran.
He said that preventing Iran from exporting oil would be "very dangerous.”
"Imposing sanctions on Iran to prevent us from selling our oil will be very dangerous. If (US President Donald) Trump wants to talk to Iran, then he first should return to the (2015) nuclear deal," the ISNA news agency quoted Rouhani as saying in a meeting with senior editors of foreign media in New York.
US State Secretary Mike Pompeo said in an interview released on Sunday that Trump was ready to engage in a constructive dialogue with Rouhani and meet him at the UN General Assembly in New York this week.
“Iran and USA’s problem could not be solved by changing governments only. We have witnessed in recent years a positive and important shift in relations between the two countries," Rouhani stressed.
When asked whether there is a possibility of a meeting with his US counterpart such of that between North Korea and the United States after a series of mutual threats, Rouhani said: "The North Korean issue is completely different from that of Iran."
“Iran has so far honored its commitments to the nuclear deal. If the five countries abide by their commitments, we can safeguard the nuclear deal, but if the situation is otherwise, it is also natural for us to take our decision in such circumstances,” he said in response to a question on Iran’s position in case Europe joined USA in regards to the nuclear deal issue.
“Although the United States has withdrawn from the deal, yet we are still committed to it,” he stressed.
