Rouhani Says National Unity Can Lift US Sanctions

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (IRNA)

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that US sanctions can be lifted if the country is united, stressing the success of the ongoing negotiations for the revival of the JCPOA in Vienna.

His remarks came during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, in an attempt to ease tensions after the leaked remarks by Iran's foreign minister stirred controversy in Iran.

"The United States and the other parties to the negotiations have no choice but to return to the path of law and fully live up to their commitments,” said Rouhani.

“As the head of the administration, I announce that the sanctions are broken and if we become united, sanctions will be removed soon,“ he said, noting that Iranian negotiators did a "great job in Vienna.”

For his part, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the refusal of the US to "terminate all the sanctions" will bring the Vienna negotiations to a halt.

Khatibzadeh was indirectly responding to “false reports” published by Press TV, which quoted an informed Iranian source as saying that Washington is refusing to "terminate all the sanctions" imposed on Iran.

Khatibzadeh denied the report, saying: “Everyone should be certain that the talks would have stopped if the US insisted on matters like this.”
