'Rough sleeper' smashes bottle over man's head in Leeds then punches him repeatedly for refusing to give cash

A man was viciously attacked with a bottle and robbed in a horrific street robbery.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for information following the shocking robbery. At 2.58am today (Friday, June 10), police were called to Heaton's Court in Leeds , where a man in his fifties had been hit over the head with a bottle.

The man had been approached by another man, described as "looking homeless", who asked him for money. When the man refused, the suspect smashed a bottle over his head and punched him over and over while he was on the ground. The man was then robbed of his phone, wallet and jacket. Police say the suspect was white, of skinny build and had the appearance of a rough sleeper.

The victim was treated in hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Crime Scene Investigation were at Heaton's Court not long after 10am this morning and a cordon was put in place.

West Yorkshire Police issued the following statement: "At 2.58am today, police were called to Heaton’s Court where a man in his fifties had been assaulted and robbed.

"He had been approached by a male who asked him for money. When he refused, the suspect smashed a bottle over his head and then punched him repeatedly while on the ground.

"He then stole the victim’s phone, wallet and jacket. "The suspect was described as white and of skinny build and had the appearance of a rough sleeper.

"The victim was treated in hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. A scene was put in place in Heaton’s Court to undergo forensic examination and was lifted shortly after 10am."
