Rotunda Hospital issues urgent warning after major cyber attack targeting patient records

A Dublin maternity hospital has issued an urgent warning after a major cyber attack targeting patient records.

The entire HSE has now shut down all IT systems as a precaution but added that vaccinations will not be impacted.

However, the Rotunda is currently battling the huge ransomware malfunction which is affecting all of the hospital's systems and records.

Staff at the hospital are working to resolve the issue and all appointments for today have been cancelled.

There is one exception which allows pregnant patients who are 36 weeks or over to come to the hospital.

Otherwise, your situation must be urgent or you will most likely be turned away.

The Rotunda will issue updated information as soon as possible on the matter.

The hospital wrote: "The Rotunda Maternity Hospital is experiencing a major ransom ware / cyber-attack which is effecting all of the hospital’s electronic systems and records.

"Staff at the hospital are working to resolve the issue

"All appointments have been cancelled for today Friday 14th May.

"The only exception is for patients who are 36 weeks or over pregnant.

"Otherwise you are asked NOT to attend at the Rotunda unless it is an emergency.

"The Rotunda will issue updated information as soon as possible."

A HSE spokesman added: "There is a significant ransomware attack on the HSE IT systems. We have taken the precaution of shutting down all our our IT systems in order to protect them from this attack and to allow us fully assess the situation with our own security partners.

"We apologise for inconvenience caused to patients and to the public and will give further information as it becomes available. Vaccinations not effected are going ahead as planned."
