Talent acquisition in late April extends well beyond a handful of draft picks. Remember — teams have to swell their rosters to 90 players, so the influx in talent this time of year is often centered around not only draft picks but also undrafted free agents.
Miami’s collection of UDFA commitments this year is making some waves. Miami’s up to date list of committed talent is as follows:
OG Deion Calhoun, WR Preston Williams, LB Terrill Hanks, CB Montre Hartage, DL Jonathan Ledbetter, C Ryan Anderson, CB Taylor Horton, OT Aaron Monteiro, LB Tre Watson, WR Trenton Irwin, DE Dewayne Hendrix, FS Rob Rolle, P Stone Wilson, CB Nik Needham and LS Les Farnsworth.
How good is the class? Rotoworld’s Thor Nystrom scored it as the second best UDFA collection in the NFL, trailing only the New Orleans Saints.
“Nobody would have batted an eye if Calhoun, Williams and Hanks had been taken anytime from the mid-5th round on,” wrote Nystrom. “Any of the three could give the Fins value.”
Miami will need a lucky hit or two if they’re going to completely avoid the expected regression in the win column this season. But more importantly, a lucky break could expedite the building process — every box checked helps immensely.
