Rotherhithe Tunnel closed: Man fighting for life after three car crash

A man is fighting for his life following a three car crash that has closed the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

The road remains shut after the smash which happened just after 2am.

Police said a man, thought to be in his 30s, is in hospital fighting for his life following the collision.

A picture released by Transport for London shows debris and wrecked cars strewn across the road.

Commuters in east London face extra traffic on both sides of the river with the tunnel shut in both directions.

A tweet from the TfL Traffic News Twitter account said: "Rotherhithe Tunnel (Both Directions) - Closed due to a collision. Use alternative routes."

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at approximately 2:15am on Wednesday December 4 to reports of a road traffic collision involving three cars in the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended the scene. One man – believed aged in his 30s – has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries; he remains there in a critical condition.

"No reports of any other serious injuries. Closures remain in place while the scene is dealt with."

There have been no arrests.

A TfL spokesman added: "Police are carrying out a collision investigation.

"There is currently no estimated time for re-opening the tunnel while the investigation is carried out."
