Rotherham United star Chiedozie Ogbene declares for Ireland as FAI work on eligibility

Chiedozie Ogbene has declared for Ireland after helping Rotherham United secure promotion to the Championship this season.

The 23-year-old was born in Nigeria but moved to Cork at the age of seven with his family and has informed Ireland boss Stephen Kenny of his international ambitions.

The FAI have kicked off the eligibility process to secure the former Cork City and Limerick winger.

Ex-Dundalk boss Kenny will know Ogbene well from his time in the League of Ireland.

Cork gave Ogbene his debut at the age of 18 and he moved on to Limerick for the 2017 season, scoring eight goals in 32 appearances.

He moved to Rotherham in the summer of 2019 following two seasons with Brentford and a loan stint at Exeter City.

New gaffer Kenny has also finalised his backroom staff ahead of Nations League clashes with Bulgaria and Finland in September and the crucial Euro 2020 play-off against Slovakia a month later.

Dundalk physio Danny Miller will work with the senior team, Colum O’Neill and Sam Rice have been brought in as athletic therapists,

Shamrock Rovers equipment manager Mal Slattery joins the equipment team along with Under-21 team kitman Fergus McNally.
