Rotherham United rule out selling Sunderland 'target' Matt Crooks to League One rival

Rotherham United boss Paul Warne believes it would be 'ridiculous' to sell star midfielder Matt Crooks to a League One rival.

The Rotherham Advertiser claims that the Millers have already turned down a £400,000 bid from their League One rivals, Ipswich Town.

Sunderland are among a host of League One and Championship clubs reportedly chasing his signature.

However, Warne believes if the right the right bid came in for the midfielder, it would be hard to stand in Crooks' way.

Manager Paul Warne said: "We don’t want to lose our best assets, even more so not to a League One rival. That would make it ridiculous.

“However, as with everything, there is a figure where it becomes impossible not to let it happen. As far as I am aware, no one is anywhere near that figure yet.”

Crooks played an integral role in the Millers 2019/20 League One promotion campaign and scored seven times, providing three assists in the Championship last season.

The 27-year-old is approaching the final year of his contract and if Sunderland are to pry him away from the New York Stadium, they would face competition from second-tier suitors; Derby, Peterborough and Middlesbrough.

The latter of the three Championship clubs are also reportedly interested in signing Sunderland's out-of-contract defender, Denver Hume.

Neil Warnock is undertaking his own rebuild at the Riverside this summer and is an avid admirer of the Black Cats youngster.
