Rotherham increase bid for St Johnstone's Sean Rooney after initial offer was rejected

Rotherham United are preparing a bid in the region of £300,000 for St Johnstone defender Shaun Rooney.

The Bellshill man was subject to a £200,000 offer from the English League One side but it fell short of the Saints' valuation.

Rooney was a revelation at right wing-back in the second-half of the season after Danny McNamara returned to Millwall during a historic season for the Perth side.

The 24-year-old was the hero in St Johnstone's double-winning season after he scored in the League Cup final, against St Johnstone, and the Scottish Cup final, against Hibernian.

Rotherham were relegated from the English Championship last season but they're keen to bolster the squad for a promotion challenge this season and Rooney is one of their main targets.

Rooney joined Callum Davidson's side last summer on a free transfer after reaching a pre-contract agreement in the previous January while he was at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Although Rotherham's bid would represent a significant profit on Rooney, St Johnstone are reluctant to sell the player for a fee lower than their valuation.
