Rossvale pushed Glencairn close, but win is all that matters, says goal hero

Michael Lone admitted relief at the final whistle as Rutherglen Glencairn beat Rossvale 3-2 in the West of Scotland League Premier Division on Saturday.

Glens seemed high and dry when Keirin Coleman and Lone struck within 11 minutes of the second half, and when Drew Wingate added a third in 70 minutes, the young midfielder admits he thought they had sealed three points for sure.

But the 22-year-old says it was a nervous last few minutes, watching from the sidelines after being replaced by Fraser Malcolm, as Hugh Kerr smashed the ball in twice to come within a whisker of snatching a draw.

Lone felt his strike gave Glens the confidence they needed to add a third, following a dull first half from both sides, and was glad of the win.

He said: “It almost secures you three points, the second goal, and then Drew scored the third and we thought ‘happy days’.

“It was a bit nervy at the end when they got back in it, but it’s a good three points and that’s all that matters, at the end of the day.

It was an important win for Glencairn (Dave Taylor)

“We were holding on a wee bit, and I was taken off for the last 10 minutes, so I was standing at the side watching that and it wasn’t enjoyable!

“But when the final whistle blew it was brilliant, it meant we had three points, and that’s all you can ask for.”

Lone, who worked his way up from the club’s under-21s last July, added: “We got two goals quickly in about three minutes. It killed them off a wee bit and built us up, so we just got better and better at that point until the last couple of minutes, when we should have kept it tighter.

“But it was a good performance all in all.

“I think my goal gave us the momentum that led to Drew scoring the third.

“It gave us a wee lift and it’s team game, so everybody’s working for each other."
