Ross Wilson to Rangers latest as Southampton board prepare for 'fresh start'

Southampton are readying their director of football operations search with Ross Wilson almost certain to join Rangers.

The Premier League side are exploring their options with reports on the south coast suggesting club hierarchy view any potential exit as a chance for a "fresh start."

Wilson has been lauded for his recruitment work at St Mary's and Rangers are keen to seal a deal to bring the talent-spotter back to his homeland.

The Daily Echo claim Southampton view the 36-year-old's departure as a way to implement a new vision moving forward.

There has been significant boardroom and personnel changes in recent years with Les Reed, Martin Hunter and former chairman Ralph Kreuger all leaving the Saints.

And it's understood chief Martin Semmens, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the club, would earn the chance to appoint his own man if Saints and Rangers come to terms on a deal.

Wilson has enjoyed a meteoric rise after turning heads with his work with Falkirk. He spent time with Watford and Huddersfield before moving to Southampton in 2015.

Rangers view Wilson as the ideal candidate to succeed Mark Allen - who departed Ibrox last month after two years as the club's director of football.

Record Sport exclusively revealed on Friday that both manager Steven Gerrard and managing director Stewart Robertson have made personal pleas to the Saints chief.

But Wilson has also come in for criticism from a section of Southampton supporters over several transfer missteps in recent season.

Mario Lemina, Guido Carillo and Mohamed Elyounoussi, now on loan with Celtic, have all failed to make the grade. There has, however, been many success stories including Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane.
