Ross Wilson reveals Rangers' changing transfer world as he lifts the lid on Ianis Hagi's fee reduction

Rangers director of football Ross Wilson has revealed the inner workings of the club's transfer deal for Ianis Hagi.

The Ibrox club made the Romanian playmaker's loan deal from Genk permanent in a £3million deal as he lifted the lid on how the market could be altered in a post-coronavirus world.

And Wilson claimed the Belgian side lowered their asking price as a result of the pandemic with auditors KPMG predicting a £9billion reduction in global transfer fees this summer.

Rangers initially were told £4.5million was the fee they would need to reach to land Hagi but Wilson thanked Genk for realising the situation and being cooperative in the deal.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "Clearly the world changed a lot between January and the end of the season.

"We've got to be thankful to Genk as well because they were quite happy to get back round the table and have a chat about how we can make the deal work in a different way to what we agreed in January.

"It was creative, it was flexible but for the young man it was something he really wanted to do and that helped, and Genk were really aware that he wanted to become a permanent Rangers player.

"Steven really wanted to have him here so we managed to make everything align and make it all work for ourselves."

Wilson went on to promise Gers fans that they can expect more investment in other areas of the market.

He added: "What we've tried to do here is be as planned as we possibly can, Ianis was the first thing that we targeted and we gone and got that done.

"We are working on other things, we are keeping a close eye on the market.

"The market is very unpredictable, for a start the transfer window isn't even open yet, it will open slightly later as we all know, it will probably extend slightly later as well but it can't go any longer than 12 weeks is my understanding from FIFA.

"But all the dates will change, we can see that the marketplace has changed, we had a deal in place with Genk for Ianis that changed because the world changed and everybody recognised that.

"What our job here is to make sure that we totally understand the market, we totally understand where all the opportunities are, but equally that we've got a clear plan at Rangers that we stick to and that's the plan that Steven and I talk about every day."
