Ross Stewart faces Sunderland injury blow as ex-Ross County striker sidelined before debut

Forward Ross Stewart has suffered an injury setback in his bid to hit the ground running at Sunderland.

The big striker arrived from Ross County in a £300,000 deal last month.

Stewart arrived with a slight hamstring issue and Black Cats boss Lee Johnson confirmed he has suffered a minor complication.

Johnson, speaking on his club’s website, said: "Ross has had what we expect to be a brief setback.

“It may be around a week to 10 days.

“He slipped in a rehabilitation drill with the physio, and felt tightness for the first time in two to three weeks.”

The 24-year-old netted six times for the Staggies this term as they attempt to achieve Premiership survival.

However, a knock picked up against Celtic on December 23 has kept him on the sidelines.

Stewart spent two and a half years in Dingwall in total and scored 28 goals in 82 appearances for the club.

He previously spent time with St Mirren, Alloa and Albion Rovers, and is hoping to take his reputation as a consistent goalscorer with him to the EFL.
