Texas billionaire and former US presidential hopeful Ross Perot has died aged 89.

The self-made businessman died early on Tuesday, a family spokesman said.

"Ross Perot, the ground-breaking businessman and loving husband, brother, father and grandfather, passed away early Tuesday at his home in Dallas, surrounded by his devoted family," the Perot family said in a statement.

In 1992, Mr Perot jumped into the presidential campaign as an independent candidate.

In that race he challenged then President George H.W. Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton.

Mr Perot drew nearly 19 per cent of the vote, the biggest percentage for a third-party hopeful in 80 years, and Republicans blamed him for Bush's defeat.

Mr Perot rose from Depression-era poverty to become one of the nation's richest men, after founding computer services giant Electronic Data Systems Corp.

He founded the first company in 1962 before selling control of it to General Motors for 2.5 billion US dollars in 1984 and later founded another company, Perot Systems.

His fortune was estimated at $4.1 billion by Forbes magazine in April 2019.
