Ross Barkley told Newcastle could be the place to 're-ignite his career'

Newcastle United 'could be the place' where England international midfielder Ross Barkley 're-ignites his career'.

That is according to former Leeds United star Noel Whelan who feels the 27-year-old 'has to make it work' if he is given an opportunity by the Magpies.

Barkley is said to be available for a transfer from Chelsea this summer having spent last season on loan at Aston Villa.

Steve Bruce is desperate for midfield reinforcements at Newcastle and Barkley has been linked with a move to Tyneside according to some reports over the weekend, although the club's financial restrictions in the transfer window will likely limit United to a loan deal.

Barkley, of course, has impressed at international level over the years and has won 33 caps for England.

The former Everton midfielder has undoubted quality but seems to have lost his way across the last couple of seasons.

As such, Whelan feels a move to Newcastle would be a huge opportunity for the Chelsea midfielder.

“We saw glimpses of his quality at Villa but I don’t think he game them enough over the season," Whelan told Football Insider.

“It was a great opportunity for him last season and let’s be honest, he spurned it.

“His next move could be his last shot at a Premier League club. It didn’t work out at Everton, Chelsea or Villa so if Newcastle given him an opportunity he has got to make it work.

“Does he want to be a squad player for the rest of his career? Newcastle could be the place where he re-ignites his career but he has to be ready to take his chance.

“He looked lost at Villa when Jack Grealish wasn’t playing last season.”
