Ross Barkley appears to make lewd gesture in response to racist chanting after scoring

Ross Barkley appeared to make a lewd gesture in the direction of Bulgaria fans aiming racist abuse at the England players.

Barkley appeared to make the gesture after scoring his second goal in the Three Lions' 6-0 hammering of Bulgaria in their Euro 2020 qualifier on Monday, directing it at the section where the racist chanting and Nazi salutes were coming from.

Three Lions duo Tyrone Mings and Raheem Sterling were subjected to shocking abuse in the first half of the fixture in Sofia, prompting referee Ivan Bebek to pause the game.

The following announcement was then made over the loud speaker: "Because of racist behaviour which is interfering with the game, the referee has indicated he may have to suspend the match.

"Please be in no doubt that the game may be suspended and abandoned if racist behaviour continues."

The game was stopped a second time moments later before Bulgaria captain Ivelin Popov was seen pleading with supporters to stop the racism.

UEFA has a three-step protocol to combat racism: the first sees the game paused while an announcement is made, the second requires players of both sides to leave the pitch as another announcement is made, and the third sees the game abandoned.

The first of the three steps was triggered on Monday.
