Rosmersholm in the West End: First look at Hayley Atwell and Tom Burke in new Ibsen adaptation

The first pictures of Hayley Atwell and Tom Burke in a new West End production of Rosmersholm have been released.

Ibsen’s play has been adapted by playwright Duncan Macmillan (People, Places and Things, 1984) and opens at the Duke of York’s Theatre this week.

The production is being directed by Ian Rickson and designed by Rae Smith, with a cast that also includes Giles Terera, Lucy Briers, Jake Fairbrother and Peter Wight.

The play, first staged in 1886, is set at a time of political unrest with an election about to take place. Burke plays clergyman John Rosmer, who is torn between fighting for a radical politics and battling with his family’s privileged past, with Atwell playing the famed role of Rebecca West.

Atwell’s most recent stage credits include Measure for Measure at the Donmar and Dry Powder at Hampstead Theatre, while Burke starred in The Deep Blue Sea at the National Theatre in 2016.

Rosmersholm runs at the the Duke of York’s Theatre until July 20
