A nighttime illumination event for about 100 varieties of fully blooming roses -- including those related to the Imperial Family -- began at Kyu-Furukawa Gardens in Kita Ward, Tokyo, on Friday.
The rose garden of the nationally designated scenic spot includes roses named after Imperial family members that are attracting attention following the start of the new Reiwa era. The orange-colored "Princess Michiko" was a gift from Britain to the Empress Emerita when she was the crown princess. The pale pink "Masako" was named after the new Empress to celebrate her wedding. Meanwhile, the pale yellow "Manyo" symbolizes the era that saw the compilation of the "Manyoshu," the poetry anthology from which Reiwa was derived.
"It's my first time to come to the garden at night, so I'm having a hard time photographing the roses. But the roses related to the Imperial family are elegant and beautiful," said an 82-year-old man from Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo.
The roses are lit up from sunset until 9 p.m. through May 19. Admission is 150, yen or 70 yen for those aged 65 and older.
