Roses are most popular flower for tattoos - with peonies and lotuses in top 10

Roses are the most Instagrammed tattoo designs of all, according to the flower experts at Bloom & Wild. Statistic show that 40% of the UK population now has a tattoo.

Celebrities including Scarlett Johansson, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga all have roses inked on them.

Rose tattoos have been posted on Instagram more than 4 million times. The biggest spike in searches for bouquets of roses and rose tattoo designs is the week of Valentine’s Day, and whilst roses might have traditionally been given to women on the romantic day, Pinterest saw a 10% increase in men saving images of rose tattoo designs.

Bloom & Wild’s Head of Brand, Jo Reason said: “Although most commonly associated with love and romance, roses hold a range of meanings depending on their variation, from gratitude and admiration to mystery and enchantment. They’re a classic for a reason and were our most sold flower on Bloom & Wild in 2022.”

Peony season

This year, peonies have overtaken lotuses as the second most hashtagged flower tattoo on Instagram, with 649,000 posts. No surprises then that peonies were also Bloom & Wild’s second most sold flower of 2022. Peony season is in late Spring, from April until early June, and ‘peony tattoo season’ seems to follow swiftly afterwards, in July and August when the designs for the tattoos were most searched on Google.

Give me a sign: Chrysanthemums & Carnations

Birth month flowers are a big trend this year, and the number of Google searches for ‘birth month tattoos’ has doubled this year in comparison to 2021. Birth flower tattoos have been viewed more than 25,000 times on video sharing site, TikTok. November’s birth flower is a chrysanthemum, which recently overtook the classic poppy in terms of popularity, and January’s birth flower, the carnation, also sneaked into the top twenty. London tattoo artist, Eli Mohan said, “People who in the past might have opted for tattoos of their zodiac signs are switching to designs of their birth flowers. I’ve started to look at pressed birth flowers for design inspiration.”

If you Lily love me

This year, Lily was the seventh most popular girls’ name in England, and also the seventh most hashtagged flower tattoo on Instagram. Lilies have been a popular choice with people of the same name including Lily Allen who has one on her lower back and their sustained popularity on Instagram has earned them 82 thousand hashtags on Instagram perhaps in part because people are getting them inked to mark the birth of daughters, nieces and loved ones. Bloom & Wild’s Head of Brand Jo Reason added, "Lilies were our third most sold flower this year. They have an assortment of meanings depending on the variety. Pink symbolises femininity and love, orange is confidence and yellow is energy and happiness. And (as with lots of flower names) our customers love sending them as gifts to newborns called Lily!”
