Rosenthal seeks second opinion to determine if elbow surgery is necessary

PITTSBURGH _ Before determining the treatment for a returning issue with his right elbow, Trevor Rosenthal will seek a second opinion, and that will help him and the Cardinals decide if surgery is required.

Rosenthal met with Dr. George Paletta on Thursday, and he will travel next week to meet with a second specialist, the Cardinals confirmed.

At issue is the stability of his ulnar collateral ligament, the ligament that if torn or compromised in some way could require Tommy John to repair. John Mozeliak, the Cardinals' president of baseball operations, said the team is trying to determine what treatment is possible _ and he added that the range goes from rest all the way to surgery.

Adam Wainwright is meeting with the Cardinals' team physicians Friday evening to have an impingement in his right elbow examined.

He has gone on the 10-day disabled list as a result of the injury. Luke Weaver will move into the rotation, and Mike Mayers has been recalled to fill Weaver's spot in the bullpen. The Cardinals expect to know more about Wainwright's injury and terms of his recovery after further review Saturday.
