Roseland man charged with burglary, threatening cops on West Side

Feb. 01--Authorities charged a Roseland man with burglary and other crimes after police officers saw him on the roof of a building in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Alvin Bowles, 43, of the 0-100 block of West 112th Place, was charged with felony counts of burglary and possession of burglary tools, according to a Chicago police statement. Bowles also was cited with two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault of a police officer.

He was ordered held in lieu of $200,000 bail Saturday during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Bowles was arrested after he was seen on the roof of a business in the 5300 block of West Harrison Street about 4 a.m. Friday.

When police officers approached Bowles on the rooftop, he told them: "Don't come by me, I have a gun and I will shoot. You all will have to (shoot) me," according to police and court documents.

Officers were able to "secure him" as he was making his way to the ledge of the roof, according to police.

Surveillance video showed Bowles getting into the building from the roof and using a pry bar on a door where cash registers were located. He took money and cigarettes from the store, according to court documents.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, and no weapon was recovered, according to the police statement.

Police later discovered items Bowles took from the store and also found a backpack with tools inside of it.

Bowles' next court date is Friday.
