Rose McGowan insists she wasn't accusing Meryl Streep of knowingly staying silent about Harvey Weinstein's alleged misconduct when she called out the actress earlier this week.
McGowan, who condemned former Weinstein collaborators who are planning a silent protest at the Golden Globes, fired back at Vogue Australia after the outlet tweeted that McGowan had accused Streep of "knowing about Weinstein's crimes."
"F off .@vogueAustralia I did not accuse her of that," McGowan tweeted in response Tuesday. "Step back."
McGowan sparked the controversy over the weekend when blasted Streep and others for preparing a silent protest in which they all wear black to the Jan. 7 awards show in a show of solidarity with those affected by sexual harassment and assault.
"Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem," McGowan tweeted in a post she later deleted. "You'll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy."
McGowan has accused Weinstein of raping her, and has been highly vocal about Hollywood's sexual misconduct problems in recent months.
Streep responded to McGowan's tweet on Monday with a lengthy statement to Huffington Post.
"I wasn't deliberately silent. I didn't know. I don't tacitly approve of rape. I didn't know. I don't like young women being assaulted. I didn't know this was happening," she said in one portion of the post.
Streep notably starred in the Weinstein-produced films "The Iron Lady" and "August: Osage County," and jokingly referred to Weinstein as "God" during a Golden Globes acceptance speech in 2012.
She stressed that she was not aware of any allegations against Weinstein in October, when accusations first began to surface against the shamed moviemaker.
McGowan previously condemned Streep at the beginning of the month for referring to Weinstein's alleged actions as "the most gargantuan example of disrespect" at a seminar.
"No, Meryl, IT'S A F _ING CRIME," McGowan tweeted in response. "You are such a lie."
Dozens of women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment, assault or rape. Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.
