Roscommon GAA ask fans to fly flags in memory of Conor Connelly

Roscommon GAA have asked fans to fly the county's flag in memory of Conor Connelly.

The former Rossies player died suddenly on Saturday aged 44.

Lorcan Dowd came up with the idea to pay tribute to the father-of-three.

Roscommon GAA posted on Facebook: "Former County Footballer Lorcan Dowd has suggested we all fly a Roscommon flag in memory of Conor Connelly.

"We like the idea and would ask you all to join us by sending us a picture of your flag flying proudly."

Already a number of Rossie fans have shared pictures flying the county flag on social media.

Creggs clubman Conor enjoyed a successful inter-county career in the late 1990's and early 2000's, winning a Connacht SFC with the Rossies.

He starred at wing-forward for the county, and was a key member of the squad that scored surprise wins over Galway and Mayo on their way to provincial glory in 2001.

Connelly worked as a solicitor since 2004, and settled in Ballycumber, co. Offaly with his wife Claire and his three kids.

Roscommon County Chairman Seamus Sweeney extended his sympathy and that of Roscommon GAA to the Connelly family, confirming the news in a statement today.

"I extend my sympathy and the sympathy of Roscommon GAA to his wife Claire, their three young children and to Conor's parents Jimmy and Nora."

"I always admired Conor as a footballer, he was a fine tenacious player who gave his all when wearing the primrose and blue. Like Rossies everywhere I really am saddened by the news".

Roscommon Assistant secretary and Creggs GAA club mate Gerry Keegan paid tribute to Conor, describing him as a popular figure.

He said: "In our successful junior championship winning year in 2016, Conor brought us up to his current club in Ballycumber Co Offaly for a midweek training session the Wednesday night before the replay. His speech to us that night helped us clinch our first county championship in 33 years."

"Conor was a fantastic footballer and his work rate for the county jersey was unquestionable. He was also a great person off the field and was always on hand to give you good advice when you'd need it."

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone here in Creggs GAA club go out to his parents, Jimmy and Nora, his wife Claire and three children Cara 11, Rossa 9 today, and Eoghan 6, his brothers Robert, James and Daragh and his sister Sharon."

"Conor will be sadly missed and will never be forgotten in our club."

He also enjoyed a spell with Dublin club St. Jude's, who offered their thoughts and prayers to his family.

The club said: "Tragic news has reached the club today with the sudden passing of former Senior Footballer and current Club legal advisor Conor Connelly.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Claire and his young family."
