Roscommon boss Anthony Cunningham heaps praise on players after brilliant Connacht triumph

Anthony Cunningham capped his birthday weekend with Roscommon's Connacht final victory over Galway in Salthill.

An emphatic second half comeback saw the Rossies claim a 1-13 to 0-11 victory over the defending champions for a 23rd provincial title.

Galwegian Cunningham, who turned 54 over the weekend, has now guided counties to success in two codes - and two provinces - after conquering Leinster with the Galway hurlers.

"I'm not getting any younger," he smiled. "So I took the job as soon as it came up, it 's just an honour and a privilege.

"They're tremendous workers. There's no bottom to them really with the work."

Galway led by five points at the break but only managed two second half scores as Roscommon dominated after Diarmuid Murtagh's 51st minute goal to go straight into the Super 8s for the second year running.

"We’ve a good bit of improvement to do, as you'll probably tell me," said Cunningham. "And you’re right.

"But we''ll settle down not after a few days and focus on the Super 8s.

“The Mayo win was a great confidence boost and when we were in trouble there, they went back to that reservoir and said, 'We've done this before'.

"We haven’t conceded a goal yet. We were rocked by Galway there and they're a top class team - and when you do get rocked it's very hard to coach or teach that. You're just hoping that their character will respond."

Conor Cox, the Rossies' quality recruit from Kerry, spelled out what it meant to the players.

"We’re absolutely delighted," said the 25-year-old. "I can’t really put it into words yet, to be honest.

"Five points down at half-time it was an uphill battle, and we believed. Anthony Cunningham is a great manager, he was always positive with us and he just told us to work on the things that we had been working on and get them better.

"We were more efficient in the second half, we were a bit more patient and that paid off.

"I’m delighted. It’s grand for the players, but when you see the supporters, young boys and girls delighted on the field afterwards, it really shows that they back us to the hilt. We’re delighted to give them something to shout about.

"My family were all here today, I saw them out there after - all delighted, all mad Rossies!".
