Rory Wilson savours post-Rangers joy as Aston Villa starlet 'shocked' by international honour

Rory Wilson says his Scotland U21s debut came as a surprise to him following his exit from Rangers.

The young striker hit the goal trail at youth level for the Light Blues last season and won a move to former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard's current club, Aston Villa. He's now been capped by Scotland at the elite youth level, coming off the bench in Thursday's 3-1 win over Northern Ireland at the age of just 16.

Wilson says it was a memorable moment for him after initially being out in Spain with the U18s, but Liverpool's Ben Doak was a familiar face welcoming him to a new group that has been a jump in levels. The Rangers academy product told the Scottish FA: "It was just a bit of a shock when the call up came to be honest – I didn’t expect it. I told my dad and my mum and they were delighted.

"It was a proud moment for me and my family. I was out in Spain with the U18s when I heard and I couldn’t believe it. I was buzzing and so was Brian McLaughlin my U18s head coach.

"All the boys have been brilliant with me so it’s been quite easy to settle in. I don’t know a lot of the boys apart from Ben Doak so it’s been good to see new faces and make some new friends.

"The more experienced guys have been great, you’re learning wee things off them every day. It’s been a big jump in the training but it’s been a good standard and it’s brilliant to train at that level every day."
