Rory Stewart knocked out in third Tory leadership ballot as four contenders remain in battle for No10

Rory Stewart has been eliminated from the Tory leadership race in the third round of voting, dashing his hopes of becoming the next prime minister.

The International Development Secretary was eliminated after coming last in the ballot with 27 votes, 10 fewer than he received in the second vote on Tuesday.

Former foreign secretary Boris Johnson topped the latest ballot once again, with 143 votes up from 126.

Four men remain in the race to replace Theresa May at Number 10.

Jeremy Hunt came in second place with 54 votes, narrowly beating Michael Gove who received 51.

While Sajid Javid finished in fourth place with 38, having picked up an extra five votes.

Following the result, Mr Stewart tweeted that he had been "moved and inspired" by the support he had received in recent weeks.

He later spoke of his surprise over losing votes in the latest ballot.

He told Sky News: "Something in the air must have made them sense that something was going in the other direction."

The cabinet minister started as an outsider in the contest but gained support after touring the country.

Mr Stewart would not say who he would now back, saying that he was looking forward to seeing his two children, aged two and four.

The Foreign Secretary said he was "not entirely sure" what the front-runner believes when it comes to when Britain will leave the EU.

In a BBC debate on Tuesday evening, Mr Johnson said the October 31 deadline for Brexit was "eminently feasible".

But Mr Hunt accused the former foreign secretary of lacking clarity on whether he guaranteed getting the UK out of the EU by the end of October.
