Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove and Sajid Javid now remain in the contest.

The votes for each candidate were, Boris Johnson 143, Jeremy Hunt 54, Michael Gove 51, Rory Stewart 27 and Sajid Javid 38.

Mr Stewart said: "I am so moved and inspired by the support I have received over the last few weeks - it has given me a new faith in politics, a new belief in our country.

"I didn't get enough MPs to believe today - but they will. I remain deeply committed to you and to this country."

The next time Tory MPs will vote in the race will be tomorrow morning.

The candidate with the lowest number of MPs on their side will be eliminated from the race to become the next Prime Minister.

Once two candidates remain their names will be put to a postal vote of 160,000 Tory party members.

A winner will be announced in July with him taking office on the 22nd.
