The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
Tambien: Deep Hai
I’ve opened with this a lot over the summer. From Munich’s Public Posession label, it’s a cosmic palate-cleanser.
The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Majestique: Must Get There (Dubka Remix)
A remix by my Mixed Fortunes bandmate Martin Dubka. It’s not one that everybody knows but it takes on another life in a club.
The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Cylob: Rewind
I don’t think I’ve ever rewound a track, so here’s a song about rewinding a track instead.
The track I think has been unfairly slept on this year
This Soft Machine: On & On
Recent single by Timothy Sullivan, who used to record as Das Moth and now makes great chuggy machine-funk like this.
The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Hatebeak: Beak Of Putrefaction
This is a death metal seven-inch I bought in 2003. Their singer Waldo has one of the most unique voices I’ve ever heard. I should also mention that Waldo is a parrot.
The track I wish I’d never played
Sparks: Beat The Clock
When I played this in Philadelphia I was rewarded with a can of a drink, appropriately named Sparks, being hurled at my head. A good reason to never play anything by Anvil, either.
The track that should have been a crossover hit
LA Priest: Oino
This is what pop music should sound like: bizarre and inventive but still has a hook that haunts you in the shower.
The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
The Fall: Married, Two Kids
Just kidding. It’d be Hi Ho Silver Lining, of course.
The best track by my favourite new artist
Jack J: Thirstin’
A delay-drenched vocal, disco bass, and gratuitous use of cowbell, AKA all my favourite things in one place.
The ideal festival track
Joe: Thinkin About
Also known as the “What on earth is that?” track from Four Tet’s recent Boiler Room set, which was finally released on his Text label. Never fails!.
