Rory McIlroy taking two weeks out from competition after 'stupid mistakes'

World No1 Rory McIlroy will take two weeks out from the PGA Tour in a bid to recapture his best golf after another tough round on Sunday at the Travelers Championships.

McIlroy carded a final-round 67, which included two bogeys on the front nine as well as a double bogey after finding the water on the 17th.

It left him in a share of 11th place as Dustin Johnson took the win, and requiring time off to help rectify a series of mistakes, which had not been part of his game before the coronavirus lockdown.

“The way I’m feeling right now, I feel like a couple of weeks off,” he said. “Mentally, it’s just getting back into that tournament routine, tournament mode, and that’s why I wanted a couple of weeks off more than anything else.

“It’s just the mental aspect, especially when you are frustrated. I’ve been frustrated on the course the last few weeks not being sort of in contention and it sucks going off in the middle of the pack on a Sunday, knowing that you don’t really have a chance.”

McIlroy, though, insisted he was not far off from recapturing his best form. He added: “There’s some really good stuff in there but then just some really stupid mistakes. It’s a little too up and down, a little bit rollercoaster-ish where it didn’t really feel like that before we stopped.”

Meanwhile, Dylan Fritteli, who missed the cut playing with Ian Poulter at the Travelers, is the latest player to test positive for Covid-19 before he was about to fly to the next PGA Tour event, the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
