Rory McIlroy still strikes it rich despite just missing out on Dubai Desert Classic win

Rory McIlroy was still in the money despite stuttering to a third place finish in the Dubai Desert Classic.

It was a heart breaking end for the Hollywood man as he was tied for the lead going down the driveable 17th.

But McIlroy found himself in danger on 17 that led to a foul mouthed rant.

McIlroy would go on to save par with a brilliant pitch and was centre of the fairway going down the par 5 18th hole.

But the four-time major winner hit his approach shot into the water and had a putt to force a playoff alongside Richard Bland and eventual winner Viktor Hovland.

Despite the loss, McIlroy will pick up some world ranking points and also picked up a cheque for €450,000.

Winner Hovland scooped some €1,195,000 for his victory and will move to third in the world.

While Richard Bland picked up €800,000 for his stellar performance.
