Rory McIlroy smashes woman's phone in nightmare start to Open Championship

Rory McIlroy got off to a nightmare start at his home Open Championship on Thursday.

The favourite went out of bounds with his first shot on the way to a quadruple-bogey and smashing the screen on a female spectator's phone in the process.

The Northern Irishman, who has described an Open at the course where he grew up learning to play golf as the biggest week of his career, held the course record before the redesign at Royal Portrush ahead of the Championship.

There would be no record in his first round, however, going well left and out of bounds off the tee.

To make matters worse his ball hit a female fan and cracking the case of her phone in her pocket.

McIlroy took another off the tee and again found the rough before his fourth shot found some bracken short and left of the first green.

The four-time major champion was forced to take an unplayable lie and had to drop, meaning he would have to get up and down for seven.

His chip left him with a good look at a triple bogey, but the putt slipped on by and he came back to start with an eight.
