Rory McIlroy says he won't tarnish reputation "for extra millions"

Rory McIlroy has once again reiterated his stance over a breakaway Super Golf League.

Amid growing speculation over the lucrative Saudi-backed proposal, a number of the world's top golfers have offered their views.

World number one Jon Rahm insists his future lies with the PGA Tour, while 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott has confirmed he’s been in talks with organisers of the proposed new venture.

McIlroy has been a vocal opponent against a rival circuit when news first started breaking in 2020, and he has remained firm in his position.

“Look, I’ve lived it—for the top guys, all that money really isn’t going to change their life,” McIlroy told Golf Digest ahead of the Genesis Invitational.

“I’m in a way better financial position than I was a decade ago and my life is no different.

"I still use the same three, four rooms in my house. I just don’t see the value in tarnishing a reputation for extra millions.”

McIlroy believes younger stars would be taking a risk by joining what he labelled a “not so Super league” for the older generation.

He has made no secret of the fact he will not join a potential rival to the PGA Tour being spearheaded by former world number one Greg Norman and backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

McIlroy added: “I understand the financial part of it for guys later on in their career. you look at the people that have already said no – Jon Rahm, number one in the world, Collin Morikawa, myself.

“You’ve got the top players in the world are saying no, so that has to tell you something.”
