Rory McIlroy responds to autumn Masters rumours as coronavirus affects golf schedule

Rory McIlroy reckons holding The Masters in autumn could prove to be a hit after the coronavirus pandemic forced the tournament's postponement.

The first major of the year at the iconic Augusta National will not take place in its traditional April slot.

It is believed that an October date is being considered and World No 1 McIlroy is open to that novel idea.

"A Masters in the fall, October time, I think it would be pretty cool," McIlroy told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.

"It would be a very different look than what you usually see at Augusta."

The 30-year-old would be aiming to complete a career Grand Slam at an autumnal Augusta.

Tiger Woods would be defending the title he won in spectacular fashion last April.

"I think it's definitely a possibility if they want to get the 2020 Masters in," McIlroy continued

"I'm sure they can make it happen if they want it to happen.

May's PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park was postponed yesterday and there are doubts over The Open at Royal St George's in July and Ryder Cup in September.

McIlroy added: "I like to think that we can get a handle on this over the next sort of couple of months, and things can return to some sort of normality, but I don't think anyone knows."
