Rory McIlroy PGA Tour Player of the Year success leaves Holywood golfer stunned

Rory McIlroy couldn't hide his shock after being presented with the PGA Tour Player of the Year by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.

McIlroy admitted he had "goosebumps" when he received the award on Wednesday afternoon.

The Holywood star was conveniently dining with Nicklaus at the Bear's Club when the PGA Tour Player of the Year trophy - also known as the Jack Nicklaus Award - was set on their table.

“I’ve already got two of those,” McIlroy told Nicklaus, unaware of what was happening.

Nicklaus replies: “You’ve got three now.”

A visibly shocked McIlroy then says: “I’ve got goosebumps.”

PGA Tour pros voted for McIlroy even though he missed the cut at his home Open at Royal Portrush and did not contend in any of the Majors.

McIlroy, who won the Players Championship and banked £12million for the FedEx Cup, said: “Brooks has had an incredible year. It speaks volumes about what PGA Tour players feel is important. Players just don’t feel only four weeks are important. We play for more than what the narrative suggests.”

The Ulsterman also won the Byron Nelson Award for best scoring average (69.057) and led the PGA Tour in Top 10s (14).

“I wanted to try and bring my best every single week I played,” said McIlroy.

“The top 10s, the consistency – the greatest compliment you can receive is that your peers feel you’ve done something pretty special.”

The new PGA Tour seasons starts today in West Virginia.
