Rory McIlroy out of Masters picture after failing to catch fire at Augusta

Rory McIlroy is likely to have to wait another year for an opportunity to complete a career Grand Slam after failing to catch fire at the Masters today.

The Holywood man needed a low third round at Augusta but had to settle for a second consecutive 71 to leave him on one under par and eight shots behind current leaders Webb Simpson and Tony Finau.

McIlroy has had plenty of birdies this week and added four more today along with an eagle at the par-five 15th.

However, his week has been blighted by too many mistakes and five bogeys, including one on the last, left the pre-tournament favourite out of contention.

He told Sky Sports: "I made too many mistakes, that has really been it.

"I made five or six bogeys the first day. I made five today. There are chances to make birdies and eagles out there and I've done that for the most part but I haven't got up and down when I needed to and I've hit some bad tee shots."

McIlroy also denied that the pressure of completing the Career Grand Slam was a factor in his play this week.

"I haven't read anything," he said.

"I knew my game was good coming in here. I haven't let any external pressure get to me. I know I can play this golf course well, I just haven't played it well enough."
