Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry storm to early contention at BMW PGA Championship

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy are well positioned after day one at the BMW PGA Championship.

The pair were out early at Wentworth and Lowry is leading the Irish charge and sits just two shots off leader Tommy Fleetwood.

The Offaly man carded a bogey free six under par with three birdies a piece on each of the front and back nine.

The 2019 Open Champion started off the day perfectly with a birdie and followed it up with birdies on four and six.

And it got better for the world number 23 with birdies on 11, 15 and 18.

Rory McIlroy finished two points behind Lowry after he was in action for the first time since scooping the top €18m prize at the Tour Championship last month.

The Northern Ireland golfer had consecutives birdies on holes five and six but a bogey on eight set McIlroy a shot back.

But the world number three had a bogey free back nine with birdies on 12, 16 and 18 to card a 68.

McIlroy now sits four shots back from Tommy Fleetwood who sits on eight under par and had a stunning six birdies in his last seven holes.

Graeme McDowell sits one under par, seven shots off the lead.
