Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry in Olympic medal mix as Xander Schauffele turns on the heat in third round

Ireland duo Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry will go on the attack in the final round of the men's Olympic golf tournament on Sunday in the hope of earning a place on the medal podium.

Both were seven under par overnight and four shots off the lead held by American Xander Schauffele - and they were paired together in Saturday morning's third round with Thai golfer Jazz Janewattanond.

By the end of the day, the American had a three shot advantage on -14 over McIlroy, who shot a 67, and four shots on Lowry, who picked up four birdies in his first eight holes.

But after bogeying 9, the Clara man was disrupted on the par 5 14th when his tee shot got stuck in a tree, and he made his second bogey of the day.

Still, his superb par putt save on 18 could be crucial come the end.

Local favourite Hideki Matsuyama, this year's Masters champion, within striking distance one shot back on -13, with Paul Casey of GB is on -12, with Mexican Carlos Ortiz.

A relaxed and confident McIlroy is in joint fifth place on -11 with Sebastian Munoz of Colombia, and Lowry is a shot further back, hoping for a fast start on Sunday.
