Rory McIlroy admits he has concerns for his mother as PGA Tour is suspended

Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy admitted he has concerns for his mother due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

The World number one was speaking after the Players Championship was cancelled after just one round.

Organisers had initially planned to play the last three rounds without spectators at Sawgrass, but a decision was later taken to abandon the tournament, as well as the next three weeks of PGA Tour events.

McIlroy believes every player on the PGA should be tested for Covid-19.

“For us to keep playing on Tour, all players and people that are involved need to get tested," McIlroy said.

"Everyone knows you can have it with no symptoms and pass it to someone that’s more susceptible to getting very ill.”

McIlroy admitted it was a "scary time" with the current coronavirus pandemic.

And he believes the PGA Tour made the right call in shutting down competition until next month.

“It’s a scary time, and I think that the PGA Tour have made a step in the right direction and I think we just have to play it by ear and take it day by day," he added.

"You look at the trends and you look at everything that’s happening across the rest of the world, it’s in its infancy here in the United States, and yeah, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

"I think it’s a hard one because you look at volunteers out here [at Sawgrass] and a lot of volunteers are in their sixties and seventies and retired and you don’t want someone that’s got the virus that passes it on to them and then they’re susceptible.

“My mother’s got respiratory issues and I certainly don’t want to get something and pass it on to her and all of a sudden there’s some sort of complication.”

Meanwhile, McIlroy says he doesn’t know when he will return to competitive action.

The tour is currently postponed until the Valero Texas Open on April 2.

“I will probably just spend some time at home and evaluate the situation and see where we go," he said.

"I think it is just one of those things where we have to wait and see. Because it is so uncertain, you are going out there practising wondering what you are practising for.

"So I don’t know. Whenever the powers to be say it is safe to return, we will do so.

"All you can do is follow the guidelines from the people who know about these things.”
