Rory Gallagher steps down as Fermanagh manager after early Championship exit

Rory Gallagher has stepped down as Fermanagh senior football manager after two years in charge.

Gallagher took charge of his native county straight from managing Donegal, where he previously had a spell as Jim McGuinness’s right-hand man, culminating in the 2012 All-Ireland success.

He enjoyed a fine first season in Fermanagh as they won promotion from Division Two and beat Armagh and Monaghan to reach the Ulster final for the first time in a decade last year though they were well beaten by Donegal as that first provincial title remained elusive.

This year, they contended strongly for promotion to the top flight only to miss out and their Championship campaign was short-lived after losing again to Donegal in the Ulster quarter-final and then to Monaghan in the first round of the qualifiers.

A Fermanagh statement confirming his departure read: “We have been notified today by Rory Gallagher that he is stepping down from the position of Fermanagh senior team manager.

“Fermanagh County Committee would like to thank Rory and his entire backroom team for all their hard work and commitment over the last two years.

“We acknowledge the progress made in respect of their work with the county team having reached the Ulster final in 2018 and gaining promotion to NFL Division 2 in the same year, a status which was maintained in 2019.

“We wish Rory and all members of his backroom team every success for the future.”

It remains to be seen if Gallagher will emerge as a contender for vacancies that have popped up in other counties of late, particularly in Derry and Monaghan.
