Rory Gallagher resigns as Derry senior football manager with immediate effect

Rory Gallagher has resigned as Derry football manager in the wake of their Ulster title victory at the weekend.

Gallagher originally “stepped aside” for last Sunday’s encounter with Armagh, which Derry won after a penalty shoot out to make it back to back provincial crowns.

Tyrone man Ciaran Meenagh, who stood in for Gallagher last Sunday, has been appointed until the end of the 2023 season.

Derry GAA confirmed the move in a statement released last night.

It is unclear if it was Gallagher or the Derry County Board who made the decision with the pressure mounting on both parties over the past week.

Gallagher has faced allegations of domestic abuse from his estranged wife, which he says had been dealt with by authorities.

It later emerged a file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), but it wasn’t pursued due to a lack of evidence.

Derry begin their All-Ireland campaign at home to Monaghan on Saturday week, before an away encounter with Donegal, followed by a meeting with Clare at a neutral venue.

Gallagher was in his fourth year with the county, having led them to just their second ever back to back Ulster titles.

He also guided Derry from Division 3 to Division 1 and has been widely lauded as one of the top football coaches in the country.
