Second-gamer Paul Momirovski was the unlikely hero as the Sydney Roosters sealed a spot in the grand final against the Melbourne Storm with a 12-4 preliminary final win over South Sydney.
In the final match at the Sydney Football Stadium before its scheduled demolition, the biggest-ever crowd at the ground of 44,380 were on hand to watch a tense, error-filled encounter.
Roosters half Cooper Cronk played for the second half of the match with a shoulder problem, his left arm hanging limply by his side.
The match was 4-4 at half-time, then Blake Ferguson powered over in the corner with a second effort after receiving an offload from Joseph Manu.
The Roosters were hanging on to their lead inside the final 10 minutes, before a high ball bounced off hands and fell to late inclusion Momirovski, who grabbed it two metres out and planted it for the sealer.
The Roosters will now face Melbourne in next Sunday's grand final.
Aside from Cronk's fitness, the other main concern for his side will be the availability of Jake Friend after a lifting tackle on Greg Inglis which could see him suspended.
More to come.
