'Room for improvement' - How the national media reacted to Arsenal's win over Bournemouth

Arsenal go into the second international break of the season in third place in the Premier League table after a hard fought 1-0 home win against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

David Luiz's first goal in a Gunners' shirt proved to be the difference between the two teams as Unia Emery's men go into the October break having lost just once this season against league leaders Liverpool.

While the league position will please Arsenal fans, some haven't been too happy with the performances, especially in defensive areas, with Emery coming under pressure from some sections of the support.

Players and fans now have a two week break to assess how the start of the season has gone for the Gunners before they are thrown back into Premier League action against newly promoted Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

So, What did the national media make of the performance against the Cherries, here is football.london 's roundup of what a selection had to say about the match.

The Guardian

"Arsenal being Arsenal we should have all probably seen this coming. After Thursday’s thrashing of Standard Liège came Sunday’s edgy win over Bournemouth. Most of the first-team players returned and the home side reverted somewhat to type – getting the job done but in a manner that filled the stadium with anxiety and continues to cloud Unai Emery’s managerial credibility with uncertainty.

"Arsenal were holding on by the end, pushed back and largely overwhelmed by opponents who smelt blood. There were mutterings in the stands and a sense Bournemouth could, and would, snatch an equaliser that on balance they probably deserved.

Emery on how Ozil can regain his place

"...There were some positives to take beyond the result. A first home clean sheet in the league this season, as well as further encouraging performances from Calum Chambers and Mattéo Guendouzi, with the latter making the clearance that snuffed out King’s stoppage-time effort.

"Beyond that – not much. Arsenal’s midfield continues to look dysfunctional while in attack Pépé was again ineffective. It came as no surprise to see the Ivory Coast international replaced on 63 minutes by Gabriel Martinelli, the 18-year-old Brazilian who scored twice in the win against Liège. Emery made 10 changes from Thursday’s team (with Mesut Özil again absent from the match-day squad) and one has to wonder if he would have been better off sticking with that lineup."

The Telegraph

"A first Arsenal goal for David Luiz, a clean sheet for a nervy defence and three points which move Unai Emery’s side into third place. Based on those facts alone, there was plenty to like for an Arsenal side which is slowly building some momentum in the Premier League.

"The rest is not immaterial, though, and the ragged nature of their performance here will have left few supporters feeling that a corner has been turned after a chaotic start to the campaign. Arsenal were not as wide open as they have been in previous games, but they remain fragile and vulnerable enough for Bournemouth to feel like they should certainly have taken a point back to the south coast.

"...The performances of Luiz and Chambers, in particular, will be a source of encouragement for a defence which has received plenty of criticism. This was Luiz’s best game in an Arsenal shirt, by some distance, and the frenzied nature of the team’s celebration of his goal was an indication of how quickly he has settled since his move from Chelsea."

BBC

"Though they were far from their best, a fourth win of the season means Arsenal go into the international break in the Champions League places having lost just once in eight league games.

"But while Unai Emery must be pleased with the way his side battled to the win, he will know there is still room for improvement, with a failure to score a second goal meaning this game was a lot closer than it could have been after their first-half performance.

"The Gunners then faded badly in the second half, though Emery cannot blame fatigue as his side showed 10 changes from the 4-0 Europa League victory over Standard Liege on Thursday.

"Emery responded by bringing on 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli for Pepe, who has just one goal in 10 appearances since his club record £72m signing move from Lille in the summer.

"Martinelli, who scored two goals in Thursday's win over Standard, showed flashes of quality and fired a curling effort over from just inside the area, but this was an attritional victory rather than one built on attacking flair."
